Homey’s app turns your TV into smart hub to control your house

Homey is pushing the smart home back into the living room. This time, it’s the TV that’s taking over control duties.

The company has launched dedicated apps for Android TV and LG’s webOS. As a result, the biggest screen in the house is now a full smart home dashboard for devices, automations, and routines.

Once installed, setup is deliberately simple. Users scan a QR code to log in, and the interface is immediately optimised for remote control navigation rather than touch or mobile input. It’s a small but important shift. This makes the experience feel native to the TV rather than a ported mobile app.

From there, Homey brings the essentials front and centre. Favourites appear first, giving quick access to commonly used devices, Flows, and Moods. That means lighting scenes, bedtime routines, or “movie night” setups can be triggered in a couple of clicks. There is no need to dig through nested menus. For more granular control, separate sections for Devices and Flows are still available.

It’s a clear sign of where smart home platforms are heading. The TV has become one of the most natural control surfaces in the modern home — always on, always visible, and usually at the centre of shared spaces. Homey is leaning into that role. It effectively turns passive viewing screens into active control panels.

But the update doesn’t stop at televisions. Homey has also introduced a browser-based version at Homey.tv. This extends control beyond the home itself. The company notes that it even works in some vehicle browsers, including Tesla’s in-car system. As a result, this opens up slightly unusual use cases like triggering automations before arriving home or opening a garage door from the driveway.

The rollout supports a wide range of Homey setups, including Homey Cloud, Homey Pro, Homey Pro mini, and self-hosted Homey Server configurations. On the TV side, LG’s webOS app is compatible with select 2021 and newer models. However, availability may vary depending on region and device.

Taken together, the update reflects a broader trend in smart home design: moving control away from phones and into shared, ambient surfaces that are already part of everyday routines.
