GoveeLife Smart Water Leak Detector 1S review

Verdict

A highly flexible and responsive device with various alert measures and extra coverage area thanks to the extendable cable, the GoveeLife Smart Water Leak Detector 1S will pick up leaks where other devices won’t. Matter compatibility would have been nice, but even without, the extra detection area makes this the brilliant leak detection system.

  • Extra coverage with cable sensor

  • Multi-channel alerts (WiFi, text, email, app)

  • Loud alarm

  • Energy efficient

  • No Matter or Zigbee support

GoveeLife Smart Water Leak Detector 1S: Introduction

As a homeowner, I want a water leak detector that has wide coverage and fast Wi-Fi alerts at all costs. I also really want to be flexible in my placement options, so having a nearly five-foot cable attached to the GoveeLife Smart Water Leak Detector 1S is a nice plus.

This means washing machines, dishwashers, and fridges are all fully covered. I got the three-pack because one is just never enough. With the wide detection range offered to my appliances and the range of notifications across the app, email and text, GoveeLife has provided a highly capable leak detection option.

Design and components

  • Requires gateway
  • Cable and sensor detection

The GoveeLife Smart Water Leak Detector 1S system requires a Wi-Fi Gateway, which you can buy with the system. This Gateway is fairly small, about the size of a nightlight, and it sits neatly in a wall socket. This can then take up to 64 sensors, each one a maximum of 1804ft away.

What sets the battery-powered sensors apart from the competition are their long cables. The 4.92-foot cable acts as an extended detection strip for leaks, with the sensor at the end housing the metal probes on both the top and the underside.

This gives each sensor a wider detection area that others, and lets them slip easily under appliances. There are also sticky pads that come with it to secure the cord in place, so it doesn’t bunch up and prevent the sensors from lying flat on the ground.

The batteries are buried deep in the casing, with tweezers and a screwdriver needed to access them. I was able to get the rubber stoppers out, but the screws would not budge. Good thing the batteries supposedly last for five years.

Features

  • Wide choice of alerts
  • Works in the GoveeLife app only

The GoveeLife Smart Water Leak Detector 1S is quite a straightforward product, that’s designed to detect water and send alerts, all managed via the Govee Home app. Each sensor can be named, so it’s easy to determine where a leak has occurred.

Alerts can be sent via the app, text and email, which makes sure you don’t miss anything important. There are also speakers on the sensors and Gateway, so you get an audible alert inside your home, too.

Amazon Alexa and Google Home support are built-in, but there’s no Matter support, which may limit the appeal of these sensors.

Performance

  • Reacts quickly
  • Cable picks up drips and leaks in a wide area

The cable sensor was definitely the standout element, instantly responding to small drips before submersion. I found that the sharp, loud alarm, drew attention to an issue, and the sound was equally noticeable on the main unit where the contact points were very sensitive.

The GoveeLife WiFi Gateway ensured that all alerts were deployed smoothly. I added the sensors to the Govee Home app, so the remote notifications knew where to go. I tested the unit, and got instant notifications across text, email and the Govee Home app. It seems like the remote monitoring capabilities really are a standout here.

Final thoughts

The GoveeLife Smart Water Leak Detector 1S offers expansive coverage through its nearly 5-foot cable. With its multi-channel alert system and siren alarm on the sensor, moisture detection is almost guaranteed. The lack of Matter support may put some off.

How we test

When we publish our reviews, you can rest assured that they are the result of “living with” long term tests.

Smart water leak sensors usually live within an ecosystem, or a range of products that – supposedly – all work in harmony. And they are designed to offer a range of different cleaning options. Therefore, it’s impossible to use a Smart water leak sensor for a week and deliver a verdict.

Because we’re testing smart home kit all day, everyday, we know what matters and how a particular Smart water leak sensor compares to alternatives that you might also be considering.

Our reviews are comprehensive, objective and fair and, of course, we are never paid directly to review a device.
