Google has finally put a date on the end of Google Assistant. After delaying its retirement at the last minute last year, the company has confirmed that it will begin shutting down Assistant on September 4, 2026. This marks the start of its full transition to Gemini.
According to emails sent to users, the switch won’t happen overnight. Instead, Google says the migration will roll out over the course of several weeks. It will gradually replace Google Assistant with Gemini across supported devices.
The first devices to make the jump are Android phones and Wear OS smartwatches. Assistant-compatible earbuds and headphones will also transition to Gemini during the rollout. This means saying “Hey Google” or long-pressing the power button on your phone will soon launch Google’s AI assistant instead.
Not every Google-powered device is affected just yet, though. Smart speakers, smart displays and other Assistant-enabled home devices will continue running Google Assistant for now. The same applies to cars with Google built-in. However, Android Auto is included in the transition and will lose Assistant support as Gemini takes over.
That distinction is particularly important for smart home users. If your home revolves around Nest speakers or displays, nothing changes immediately. The deadline applies primarily to Google’s mobile ecosystem. Home devices will remain on the existing Assistant platform until Google announces the next phase of its rollout.
When Google first postponed Assistant’s retirement, it suggested the migration would be complete by March 2026. That deadline slipped by around six months, but the extra time has given Gemini room to mature. Over the past year, Google has steadily expanded its conversational abilities, smart home controls and natural language understanding. This has made it a far more capable replacement than when the transition was first announced.
For many users, the change may barely be noticeable. Anyone who has already opted into Gemini won’t see much difference once Google flips the switch. But those still relying on Google Assistant have just a few weeks left before the company starts moving them over automatically.
For Google, it’s the clearest sign yet that Gemini is no longer an experiment running alongside Assistant. From September, it becomes the company’s default AI assistant on Android. Meanwhile, the countdown begins for one of the smart home’s most recognisable voice assistants.
