Arlo Pro 6 vs Arlo Essential 3: Which security camera should you buy?

If you’re choosing between the Arlo Pro 6 and Arlo Essential 3, the biggest difference isn’t actually resolution. Both record in 2K, both connect directly to Wi-Fi without requiring a hub, and both offer two-way audio, sirens and Arlo’s increasingly sophisticated AI features.

The slight confusion is that the Arlo Essential 3 range includes multiple cameras, including the wired Essential 3 2K Indoor and the wired pan-and-tilt model. As these are both really designed for different purposes and indoor use, it’s more sensible to compare the Pro 6 with the Arlo Essential 3 2K Security Camera, a battery-powered outdoor model.

This model has an integrated (rather than removable) battery, a 2K resolution and a narrower 130° field of view. These restrictions makes the Pro 6 the more capable camera, but it doesn’t automatically make it the better buy, depending on what you want to achieve. We’ll look into the differences here.

The Pro 6’s 2560 x 1440 resolution is the same as on the Essential 3, but the bigger practical difference is the lens. At 160° diagonally, the Pro 6 can cover substantially more of a garden, driveway or large room without needing to be positioned as carefully. The Essential 3 has a 130° diagonal view, which is still good, but you get a narrower view.

Price and availability

In the UK, the Essential 3 2K is currently listed by Arlo from £99.99 / $69.99, while the Pro 6 is listed from £169.99 / $129.99 before discounts. Arlo’s store has recently been discounting both models, so actual prices can vary considerably depending on the promotion.

That puts the Essential 3 at £70 less than the Pro 6. Retail pricing can be even lower during sales.

That price isn’t the full story. Cloud recording and the more advanced AI capabilities sit behind Arlo Secure, so the cost of the camera isn’t the total cost of ownership.

Installation and power

The Pro 6 is designed to go where you need it. Its removable battery means there’s no power cable to route through a wall or across a patio, and Arlo rates it for up to eight months between charges. The battery can also be removed from the camera, meaning you don’t necessarily have to take the whole camera down just to charge it, and can even swap for a spare battery. It can be mounted outside and carries an IP65 rating, with an operating temperature range of -20°C to 45°C.

That makes it a much more sensible choice for a driveway, garden gate, shed, detached garage or any location where mains power isn’t convenient.

The Essential 3 takes a similar approach. It, too, is battery powered, and intended outdoor use. The main difference is that the battery is integrated, so the entire camera has to be taken down to charge. And, if the battery fails, you’ll need a new camera entirely. Battery life is rated at a slightly lower six months.

Video quality, HDR and night vision

Both cameras produce detailed footage, and shoot at the same 2560 x 1440 resolution, but the Pro 6 has a wider 160° field of view (130° on the Essential) and adds HDR. As you can see from the images below, there’s not much in it. The Arlo Pro 6 has a slightly wider shot of the garden, but overall image sharpness and quality is similar.

Arlo Pro 6

Arlo Essential 3

The Pro 6 has both infrared black-and-white night vision and colour night vision, with its integrated spotlight providing illumination. The Essential 3 offers similar, but a better-quality sensor on the Pro 6 means its night time images are sharper with less motion blur.

Arlo Secure

Both cameras require an Arlo Secure subscription for improved motion detection and object detection. The cameras can identify people, pets, sounds and fire through Arlo’s newer AI system, while activity zones can be used to concentrate detection on particular parts of the image. You can also create privacy zones to block specific areas from monitoring.

On the same subscription level, both cameras give you the same set of features. Subscription prices vary by features and location, not by camera type.

Build quality and reliability

The Pro 6 feels like the more substantial piece of hardware and has a marginally nicer design. The Essential 3 isn’t far off, and still has Arlo’s usual curved body.

The big difference is, as mentioned, that the Essential 3 has an integrated battery. Should you get a battery issue, you have to replce the entire unit; with the Pro 6, you can just swap out the battery.

Winner: Pro 6 for hardware; neither gets a completely clean reliability verdict

Which should you buy?

The Arlo Pro 6 is the better security camera: its 2K+ HDR video, 160° field of view, removable battery and colour night vision all give it a few advantages over the Essential 3.

But, the Essential 3 is still an excellent camera, and for considerably less, you get most of the same features, and the compromises are no HDR, an integrated battery and narrower field of view. If you’re on a tighter budget or want an add-on camera for a less important area, the Essential 3 is a good choice.
