IKEA’s new STRÅLA Christmas tree swaps branches and needles for strings of LED lights. The 150cm tree costs £25.
Instead of branches, it has a single central pole, with 180 LEDs on strings that run from the top of the frame down to the floor.
IKEA says it works indoors and outdoors, so you’re not stuck with it in one corner of the living room all season.
The open design also suits smaller homes and flats, where a full artificial tree takes up a lot of floor space and a real one leaves pine needles to clear up in January.
STRÅLA matchstick floor lamp
The STRÅLA range also includes a floor lamp made from three oversized wooden matchsticks, each with an LED in its red tip that gives off a warm glow. The lamp first went on sale in 2025 for £17, and it’s more of a decorative piece than a festive centrepiece.
It has two dimming levels, so it works better as a soft accent light on dark winter evenings than as a main light.
How to make them smart
Neither light has smart features built in, but plugging either one into a smart plug gives you scheduling and remote control, with no rewiring needed.
IKEA’s own GRILLPLATS smart plug costs £7. It supports Matter and works with the IKEA Home app, which is handy if you already use the company’s other smart lights and sensors.
For remote control you’ll need a hub, such as IKEA’s DIRIGERA, or an Amazon Echo, Apple Home or Google Nest device that supports Matter and works as a Thread border router.
With a hub set up, you can put the lights on a timer, which saves energy and can make it look like someone’s home while you’re away over Christmas.
You can also control them by voice with Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri, depending on your platform, and add them to a festive routine.
The STRÅLA LED tree is on sale now at IKEA for £25. IKEA hasn’t said how long the Christmas range will stay on sale.
