Govee UpDown Wall Light review

Verdict

The Govee Outdoor UpDown Wall Light is the kind of product that makes you smile the second it turns on. It’s bold and a little over the top, which is exactly what you’d expect from Govee in its quest to reinvent outdoor lighting. With independent color zones on all four sides, full Matter support, and proper year-round weatherproofing, this is one of the smartest outdoor fixtures you can buy for the money. It won’t suit everyone’s taste design-wise, but if you like your smart lighting bold and architectural, the UpDown absolutely nails it.

  • Wildly customizable colors

  • Bright, even diffusion

  • Matter and ecosystem support

  • Simple, sturdy setup

  • No built-in mic

  • Bulky design

  • App still cluttered

Govee UpDown Wall Light: Introduction

  • Lighting type: Smart outdoor wall light with four independent lighting zones
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
  • Ecosystems: Matter, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings

Govee’s latest outdoor light fixture, the UpDown Wall Light, takes the brand’s trademark RGBIC flair and splashes it across your exterior walls.

Instead of the usual static glow, the UpDown provides, as the name suggests, beams that shoot up, down, but also out from both sides, too, creating a wraparound wash of color that can be tuned independently in every direction.

As with most of Govee’s recent releases, like the Strip Light 2 and the Uplighter, it’s Matter-compatible out of the box, so it integrates seamlessly with any smart home ecosystem and also works directly with Alexa and Google Home.

I’ve had the UpDown lighting up my office patio for a couple of weeks, read my full review to find out more…

Design and installation

Govee UpDown Wall Light out of box

The UpDown is incredibly big and bulky. It actually looks more like a speaker than a light, with its grooved front panel. It’s actually quite strange looking. Not quite ugly, but certainly not quaint either.

At just over 10 inches tall and about 5 wide (and sticking 4 inches out of the wall when mounted), the UpDown will be noticed.

If you like modern fittings, like me, then you’ll love it. If you prefer more traditional designs, like my wife, then it’s a firm “no way, not on the house” (hence why I mounted it on my office wall.)

The ribbed front design gives it a futuristic vibe, which is why it might not appeal to traditionalists, but once it’s lit, it all makes sense. In daylight, it looks fine, and it obviously all looks a lot better when doing its thing in the dark, but more on that in a bit.

The casing is a durable UV-resistant polycarbonate instead of metal, which makes it both lighter and better suited for weather exposure. It doesn’t have a premium “metallic” feel, but it’s well-built and clearly engineered for outdoor life.

The top and bottom lights feature lenses, reflectors, and a diffuser and both side lights have frosted lenses to create their effects.

Installation is simple enough: screw the included bracket onto your wall, clip the fixture in place, and secure it with side screws.

There’s a little plastic bit in the back section you can remove to feed the wire different direction; i.e. if you want the wire coming down vertically rather than disappearing in the wall right behind it.

The wiring is also straightforward. The two wires are black and white and there is a little card that explains that the phase /live is the black one.

Different regions have different color codes, so I guess black and white are easier.

If you want extra waterproofing, a small bead of silicone around the edges wouldn’t hurt, but it’s already rated IP66, meaning it’s completely dust-tight and can handle strong water jets from any direction.

Setup and the app

When you first power it on, and the UpDown greets you with a quick light show before settling into standby.

Pairing is painless. You can scan the Matter QR code directly, but the Govee app is still the best place to start. It uses Bluetooth to discover the device, then connects to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (no 5GHz support).

Once it’s online, you can link it to Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home via Matter using the same QR code.

That said, the Govee app remains the command center for everything cool this light can do. It’s still busy – like a lighting lab packed into a single screen – but it’s much easier to navigate these days.

You get a multitude of preset scenes, a collections of DIY modes, and the option to literally “paint” your own effects across each lighting zone.

There are 17 addressable segments on each side, plus the top and bottom beams, all of which you can add extra effects to, so the level of customization is, as always with Govee, pretty wild.

Govee’s AI Lighting Bot can even generate new patterns based on whatever mood or theme you type in. This is sometimes brilliant, sometimes chaotic, but always entertaining.

Finally, if you’re out of ideas, you can browse and download lighting scenes created by other Govee users right inside the app.

Govee UpDown Wall Light multi colour

With RGBWW emitters on the top and bottom and RGBIC down the sides, the UpDown delivers a remarkably smooth and vivid glow. It’s rated at 1,200 lumens, which is bright enough to light up a large patio or wall area without creating harsh glare.

The wall-wash design helps diffuse the light beautifully. There were no weird hotspots and no uneven patches. Each side can be tuned independently, so you can mix warm whites with vivid colors or go full-on gradient party mode.

Compared to the Govee Uplighter Floor Lamp, which leans into dramatic light shows, the UpDown feels a little more architectural. Some of the faster effects are overkill outdoors… just because you can doesn’t mean you should, but slower transitions and static gradients look incredible.

Color accuracy is excellent, with rich reds, deep blues, and clean whites that rival much pricier brands. Set everything to white, and it’s easily bright enough to make your exterior space usable at night. Just remember: this is accent lighting, not a floodlight. It’s for style, not security.

Music mode is the only mild letdown. There’s no built-in mic, so it relies on your phone’s microphone to sync lighting to sound, which is obviously not ideal if your phone’s inside.

If you’ve got Govee’s DreamView system, though, it syncs perfectly across multiple devices, making it a genuinely fun feature for parties or movie nights outdoors.

Final thoughts

The Govee Outdoor UpDown Wall Light sums up everything Govee does best: big color, smart features, and loads of personality. It’s bright, playful, and surprisingly practical once you find your preferred settings.

The design might divide opinions, but if you’re into modern lighting and want something that turns heads, it’s a standout choice.

At $129.99 for one or $229.99 for a two-pack, it’s also very well priced considering the brightness, build quality, and Matter support.

If you’re after a discreet, minimalist outdoor fixture, look elsewhere. But if you want incredible light shows in your outdoor spaces then the UpDown is a great option.

How we test

When we publish our reviews, you can rest assured that they are the result of “living with” long term tests.

Smart lights usually live within an ecosystem, or a range of products that – supposedly – all work in harmony. Therefore, it’s impossible to use a connected light for a week and deliver a verdict.

Because we’re testing smart home kit all day, everyday, we know what matters and how a particular light compares to alternatives that you might also be considering.

Our reviews are comprehensive, objective and fair and, of course, we are never paid directly to review a device.
