Eddy Cue and Formula 1 CEO tease ‘F1: The Movie’ sequel at Apple TV press day event

Act surprised, but it is looking increasingly likely that Apple TV’s most successful movie to date might get a sequel. Here are the details.

’Stay tuned’

During yesterday’s Apple TV press day, the company announced multiple movies and series that will be debuting on its streaming platform throughout 2026, along with renewals for several hit shows.

Toward the end of the event, Apple SVP of Services Eddy Cue held a brief Q&A, where he read questions from attending press.

As reported by THR, Cue read the final question while sharing the stage with Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, who reportedly “flew in last night from Europe for the event”:

“I got one last question that they asked,” Cue said, holding an iPad that fielded all press questions submitted their way. “It’s my favorite question of all, and it’s kind of a boomerang because both of us will answer: Is there going to be another Formula 1 movie given the success and how great the first movie was.”

Domenicali answered first. “Stay tuned,” he teased. “We’re going to tell you something more in the future. Never say never. But we need to digest more the success of this movie because it was something unique. And if you want to think of a new one, it has to be really, very, very good. Therefore, if this will happen, it will not be for next year. But maybe next year we’re going to be here [at the press day], and hopefully we have something more to announce [then].”

Cue, on the other hand, took the opportunity to promote Apple’s exclusive deal to stream F1 races in the US:

“I’ve got a great announcement for it. We’ve got 24 F1 movies this year on Apple TV,” he said, referencing the number of F1 races in the upcoming season. “I don’t know the ending, and so it is the best unscripted drama that there could be in the world.”

9to5Mac’s take

While the executives stopped short of confirming a sequel to F1: The Movie, they were uncharacteristically open about their willingness to work on it, which isn’t at all surprising given the movie’s success and momentum.

If anything, the fact that Cue chose to read that question is a not-so-subtle sign that Apple wants to keep talk of a sequel alive.

F1: The Movie is nominated for Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Film Editing at the upcoming Academy Awards, and has picked up 15 awards to date, including Best Country Solo Performance win at last Sunday’s Grammys.
