Apple TV has two new sci-fi series coming as spinoffs to beloved hits

Apple TV keeps proving itself a destination for sci-fi fans, and now two of the streamer’s beloved hits have inspired spinoff series that are coming.

Star City is a spinoff to For All Mankind, coming May 29

Long before Severance, Pluribus, and Silo, the first ever Apple TV sci-fi series was For All Mankind.

New seasons of For All Mankind are still being made, with season 5 premiering later this month.

Right when that season wraps up, a new spinoff series will debut: Star City.

Star City is an alt-history space race drama just like For All Mankind, set in the same basic world and storyline. But rather than focusing on the Americans, it tells the story from the Soviets’ perspective.

Here’s Apple’s official summary:

A bold new chapter inspired by the critically acclaimed space-race drama, “For All Mankind,” “Star City” is a propulsive paranoid thriller that takes us back to the key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race — when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humankind forward.

Star City hits Apple TV on Friday, May 29 with two episodes, followed by weekly releases through July 10.

Young Lee Shaw prequel coming for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

Another major sci-fi series, one that’s currently airing, is Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

The Godzilla, Kong, Monsterverse series stars Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell in a family-centric mix of sci-fi action and character drama.

Just before the new year kicked off, Apple announced that Monarch will be getting multiple spinoff series.

The first of those series has Wyatt Russell reprising his role as the young Lee Shaw.

Per Apple’s press release:

Starring and executive produced by [Wyatt] Russell, the spinoff series will follow the story of Colonel Lee Shaw, an American operative who, in 1984, went on a secret mission behind enemy lines in an attempt to stop the Soviets from unleashing a horrific new Titan big enough to destroy the U.S. and turn the tide of the Cold War.

Joby Harold, Emmy-nominated screenwriter and producer, will be the showrunner. Joby is also overseeing Legendary’s entire Monsterverse franchise for Apple.

Release timing hasn’t been shared for this first Monarch spinoff, but it likely won’t be until 2027 or later.
