Apple planning ‘new colors’ for iMac update this year

Since introducing the current iMac design in 2021, Apple has upgraded the chip inside twice while refreshing the colors just once. It sounds like that will change later this year.

Mark Gurman reports in his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg that Apple plans to use new colors when it next updates the iMac.

Apple currently sells the M4 iMac, introduced in October 2024, in seven color options: blue, purple, pink, orange, yellow, green, and silver.

These particular colors were part of the M4 iMac refresh, offering a different version of the same seven colors originally chosen on the M1 iMac. Apple did not tweak the colors with the M3 iMac release, and Apple skipped the M2 chip for the iMac.

Looking ahead, Gurman says that Apple plans to launch an iMac refresh “in new colors later this year.”

[…] I am told the pending iMac update will include a refreshed color palette.

We’ll have to wait and see if this means all new colors not previously offered, or if Apple is again planning to adjust the shade of its chosen set of iMac colors. Processor-wise, Apple currently offers the M5 chip in several machines, including the new M5 MacBook Air, so the iMac could be upgraded to it. Or Apple could hold the iMac refresh until the M6 chip is ready.

In the same piece, Gurman says that “Apple continues experimenting with iMacs featuring beefier processors and larger displays,” but that’s in the context of future high-end machines and not a new product planned for release this year.

What colors do you still want to see on the iMac? Let us know in the comments.
