Amazon has unveiled a new Alexa-powered digital photo frame designed to bring forgotten pictures out of your phone’s camera roll and into your home. The Alexa Photo Frame combines a 10-inch touchscreen with Alexa+ features that can automatically select, organise and display your favourite memories.
Announced alongside Amazon’s latest Alexa devices, including a new smart alarm clock and 16-inch Echo Show, the frame connects to Amazon Photos to display pictures without needing to transfer them manually. Prime members can also take advantage of unlimited photo storage included with their membership.
The frame itself features a 10-inch HD touchscreen with a semi-matte finish designed to reduce reflections. It automatically adjusts its brightness to suit the surrounding room, while a real wood border and off-white matting give it a more traditional appearance than a typical smart display.
However, it’s the Alexa+ integration that makes things more interesting. Rather than simply cycling through an entire photo library, Amazon says its AI assistant can analyse pictures based on who’s in them, when they were taken and their overall content to choose which memories appear.
It can also take the time of year into account, bringing back Halloween costumes around October, for example, rather than displaying them randomly in the middle of summer. And if there’s a particular memory you want to revisit, you can simply ask Alexa to find photos from a specific event.
Another clever feature allows Alexa+ to identify related moments taken years apart and display them together. That could mean seeing a childhood photograph alongside a more recent recreation of the same moment, without having to search through hundreds of pictures yourself.
Amazon is also making the frame suitable for gifting. You can set one up for a family member with photos and recorded voice messages explaining the stories behind them. Other relatives can contribute their own pictures remotely, keeping the display updated with new memories.
The Alexa Photo Frame starts at $199.99 for the Black version, while the Birch and Walnut finishes cost $229.
It’s a different approach to the usual Alexa smart display, putting family photographs ahead of smart home controls. And for anyone with thousands of pictures sitting untouched on their phone, that could be a welcome change.
