Apple has a big MacBook Pro redesign in the works (possibly called MacBook Ultra) that’s expected to launch in October. Here are three rumored new features that we’ve waited a long time for.
#1: OLED display
It’s hard to overstate the value of display technology for a product that many users spend all day looking at. Yet for years, the Mac has lagged behind Apple’s other products in offering the most cutting-edge display tech.
OLED has been a mainstay on iPhone for years, and iPad Pro introduced a tandem OLED in 2024 that many Mac users pined for. Now with the new MacBook Pro, OLED is finally coming to Mac.
The redesigned MacBook Pro with OLED is expected to offer truer blacks, improved contrast, and likely help out with battery life too. Here’s hoping it’s able to match the impressive tandem OLED the iPad offers.
#2: Touchscreen
Apple has long argued that the Mac doesn’t need a touchscreen, despite competing products nearly all offering touch. But rumors indicate we’re finally getting the first Mac with touch support.
The new MacBook Pro will have a touchscreen, and macOS 27 is already packed with hints that such a feature is coming. We’re expecting further software optimizations to make touch feel like a natural experience on the Mac.
Despite touch being available, macOS will remain tailored primarily for trackpad and keyboard input. Touch will be a secondary tool on the Mac, not replacing traditional input methods but rather supplementing them for users who have grown accustomed to touchscreens on iPhones, iPads, and PCs.
#3: No more notch
When Apple last redesigned the MacBook Pro in 2021, it introduced a notch design that first came to iPhone. The notch then spread to the MacBook Air too, making it a fixture of modern Mac design.
But the new MacBook Pro will reportedly drop the notch in favor of a hole-punch camera cutout that likely resembles what we’ve seen on iPhone Duo.
The Dynamic Island will be brought over to macOS too, making the camera cutout integrate seamlessly on the Mac like it does on iPhone. As someone who finds the notch more of an eyesore on the Mac than I ever did on iPhone, I’m excited to see the notch disappear soon.
