After a few years when robot vacuum cleaners were adding largely unnecessary features (robot arms and a range of mop pads, anyone?), things are back on an even keel, as the Dreame X60 Pro Ultra Complete shows.

Rather than adding more things you don’t need, it improves the things you do: stain detection, mopping, edge cleaning and navigation. Incredibly well priced given the features available, the Dreame X60 Pro Ultra Complete hits all the right notes, with only the occasional interface quirk to get in the way.

The Dreame X60 Pro Ultra Complete looks similar to last year’s X50 Ultra Complete, but there are meaningful changes beneath its familiar rounded shell.

At 89mm tall with its LiDAR dome retracted, the X60 is the same height as the X50, able to slide under low furniture. This LiDAR dome also houses the physical controls: start/stop cleaning, and return to dock.

There are still bits of furniture that the robot can’t get under, which is where its double-jointed arm system comes into play. One of the mop pads can extend by 18cm and the side brush by 12cm, allowing the robot to reach farther into corners, clean around chair legs and tackle areas beneath furniture that its body cannot enter.

There is also a clip-on brush designed to wipe skirting boards and plinths. It may help with pet hair and loose dust, but it proved less useful against marks that require cleaning spray and a cloth.

Front-facing cameras use AI to identify and avoid obstacles, but they’re also there for stain detection.

To improve detection, an integrated light illuminates the area in front of the robot to help it spot messes to target.

Underneath are dual brush bars that rotate in opposite directions to reduce hair tangles, alongside a side brush and two circular mop pads. The brushes and mops can lift to clear obstacles, with the mop pads raising by 10mm. For vacuum-only cleaning, the robot can leave its mop pads at the dock, preventing them from dampening deep-pile carpets.

The X60 can cross a single 5cm threshold or negotiate two 5cm steps for a total climb of 10cm. In homes with raised transitions between rooms, that could allow it to reach places that stop other robot vacuums in their tracks.

Maintenance is largely handled by the docking station. Its disposable 3.2-litre bags can hold up to 100 days of dirt.

On the top, 4.2-litre clean-water and 3-litre dirty-water tanks take care of mop washing and refilling. The dock uses 100°C water to clean the mop pads, while the robot mops floors with water heated to 40°C.

Detergent is dispensed automatically from a separate tank. Dreame provides a bottle to get started with.

Dreame includes useful spares, too, including additional mop pads, brush bars, filters and a side brush.

App and cleaning options

Once connected to Wi-Fi, the X60 maps the home automatically. Its maps are clear and neatly defined, with controls for splitting and merging rooms, adding no-go zones and placing furniture.

Furniture also works as a shortcut for targeted cleaning, making it easy to send the robot around a sofa or dining table. Alternatively, you can clean individual rooms, the entire map or a manually selected zone.

There are four main modes: vacuum, mop, vacuum and mop, or mop after vacuuming. You also get four suction levels, four route options and a choice between one or two passes.

The controls are comprehensive, but not always elegant. Dreame offers 32 mop wetness settings, which is far more choice than most people need. The number-of-passes control is also placed on the main map rather than alongside the other cleaning options, which feels unnecessarily awkward.

More useful settings include cleaning in the direction of the flooring, automatically increasing power on carpets and leaving the mop pads behind when tackling thicker carpet. The robot can also detect stains and clean them more thoroughly without manual intervention.

Performance

With a claimed maximum suction power of 42,000Pa, the X60 is the most powerful robot vacuum cleaner that I’ve tested, on paper. Its real-world cleaning is just as impressive.

On carpet, it removed every trace of flour after two passes at full power. It delivered the same result on hard flooring, collecting the entire test spill without difficulty.

Edge performance was strong rather than flawless. After two passes and a mop, only a very thin line of flour remained against the kitchen plinth. I’ve seen roller-based vacuums do slightly better here.

Mopping is where the X60 really stands out. Coffee and dried red wine disappeared in a single pass. For the mud test, the initial vacuuming run collected the loose debris before two mopping passes removed the ground-in stain completely.

The dried ketchup test was tougher. Even so, the combination of detergent, hot water and automatic stain detection removed almost all of it within two passes. One small spot remained, but disappeared after a third run.

The clip-on plinth brush was less convincing. It can collect loose debris, but marked kitchen plinths still required cleaning spray and a cloth. To be honest, I wouldn’t bother attaching it.

Navigation is excellent. The X60 avoided shoes, cables and fake pet mess without becoming trapped, even in a busy home technology lab. Its extending arms also help it clean closely around furniture without compromising that careful obstacle avoidance.

Noise reached 67.2dB, which is below the level of a cordless vacuum cleaner running in its standard mode.

Battery life is equally strong. The robot completed two passes of the home technology lab and still had enough charge remaining for spot-cleaning jobs. It should comfortably cover a regularly sized home on one charge.

Final thoughts

The Dreame X60 Pro Ultra Complete is an outstanding robot vacuum and mop. It has the power to tackle substantial spills, the intelligence to find and remove stubborn stains, and the agility to clean areas many rivals cannot reach.

Its app has a few odd design choices, while the clip-on plinth brush is more interesting in theory than practice. Those are minor complaints, though. For demanding homes with mixed surfaces, awkward furniture and troublesome thresholds, this is a superbly capable cleaning system.
