
A burst pipe or an overflowing washing machine can cause thousands of pounds of damage before you even notice there’s an issue. How does a water leak detector work?
Most consumer sensors, including popular models from Aqara, GoveeLife and SwitchBot (all featured in our guide to the best water leak sensors), rely on simple electrical conductivity rather than anything resembling flow measurement. Simple models have two exposed metal contacts on its underside, spaced a short distance apart, forming an open circuit.
Domestic water is conductive enough to bridge that gap, completing the circuit and triggering an alert.
The shape of a sensor has a real effect on how easy it is to place correctly. Compact “puck” sensors, like the Aqara Water Leak Sensor, keep their contacts only on the underside, so the device needs to sit flat and water needs to pool beneath it before it triggers, and it can’t detect a drip landing on top.
Some water leak sensors add contacts on top, so they can pick up drips falling on them, say because the boiler above is leaking.

Clamp-On Water Monitors
So far, the water leak detectors mentioned all detect water in a limited area, but there are alternatives: clamp-on flow sensors or spot sensors.
Spot sensors are one category of leak detection, not the only one.
