Google has quietly increased the price of almost its entire Nest security lineup in the US, with cameras and doorbells now costing up to $50 more than before. The new prices took effect immediately on August 31, with Google citing rising component costs as the reason for the change.
Five Nest products have received price increases, with most going up by around 11%. The changes are particularly noticeable for anyone who was considering buying a new Nest camera or doorbell, as several models have seen their prices rise by $20 or $30, while one has jumped by $50.
The Nest Cam (indoor or outdoor, battery) now costs $199.99, up from $179.99. The Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen) has increased from $149.99 to $199.99, while the Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen) has gone from $99.99 to $129.99.
Google has also increased the price of both versions of its Nest Doorbell. The Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) and Nest Doorbell (battery) now cost $199.99, compared with $179.99 previously.
The biggest increase is on the Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen), which has jumped by $50. That makes it considerably more expensive than it was just before the price change. The wired third-generation Nest Cam Indoor has also received a sizeable $30 increase, while the battery-powered Nest Cam and both Nest Doorbell models are $20 more expensive.
Interestingly, the Nest Cam with Floodlight bundle has escaped the price increase for now and remains at $279.99. Google’s other smart home products, including the Google Home Speaker, fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, Nest Thermostat and second-generation Nest Hub, also retain their existing prices.
Google blames rising component costs
The higher prices currently appear to be showing primarily on the Google Store, while some third-party retailers are still listing the affected products at their previous prices. That could give shoppers a short window to pick up a Nest camera or doorbell for less before retailers update their listings.
Google confirmed the reason for the change in a statement, saying: “Due to rising component costs, we are adjusting the U.S. pricing of select Google Nest cameras, doorbells and Google TV streamer 4K, effective August 31.”
The company also reiterated its commitment to continuing to provide feature updates and smart home security improvements for its Nest products.
For now, the price changes are limited to the US. If you’ve been considering a Nest camera or doorbell, however, it’s worth checking retailer prices sooner rather than later. Some stores may still have existing stock at the old prices before the increases filter through.
