Aqara Water Leak Sensor: Introduction

One of the things that I like most about Aqara is that it has a wide ecosystem that takes in multiple devices that can be automated together, and you can bridge everything to be Matter compatible.

That’s true of the Aqara Water Leak Sensor, which connected to my M3 Hub alongside almost a dozen other devices. Like all the rest, it supports both Zigbee and Matter. It’s well-priced, simple to pair, and even easier to deploy around the house.

Design and components

With its IP67 dustproof and waterproof rating and its anti-UV material shell, the puck-like Aqara Water Leak sensor is sleek and energy-efficient. It runs off a single CR2032 battery, which is hidden behind a panel at the back of the sensor, removed easily with a coin.

It’s easy to change the battery, but you won’t have to do this often: a cell can last over two years.

Wireless and sensitive, the probes are durable and meant for compact spaces, able to slip under most appliances.

I already had the Aqara Hub M3, so adding the device was simple. A click of a button and a couple of blinking lights before pairing. Done. The only real restriction is that Aqara says that this device should be placed within 400 inches of a Hub, which may be more of an issue in large homes.

Once in the app, the sensor can simply sit there, and alert you when it detects water, with a clear phone alert.

Inside the Aqara ecosystem you can also use the Water Leak sensor with the Valve Controller T1 to automatically turn off your water supply when water is detected. That can prevent a lot of damage, particularly if you happen to be away when a leak occurs.

Although the Water Leak Sensor uses Zigbee to communicate to the Hub, via a Hub you can bridge the device to any Matter system of your choice and handle automation externally.

In addition to the water leak sensor, there’s also a built-in temperature sensor. This could well be useful for alerts when it’s very cold and there’s a risk that your pipes could freeze. The only downside is that the device does not yet offer climate control, but it could one day be automated to the W200 thermostat.

Performance

• Quick to respond
• No false. alerts

I found performance to be excellent. There were no false alarms or failed responses, in fact each test resulted in quick alerts regardless of how much moisture it contacted. The Zigbee connectivity ensured rapid alert arrival each time. I was sliding this thing into all kinds of crevices because of its tiny size, but it really needs to lie flat for its probes to detect anything. They are only on the bottom, so pooling is crucial as the sensor can’t detect drips on top.

It’s a shame that there’s no built-in speaker for alerts, and you only get detection alerts via the app.

Final thoughts

The only real downside to this device is that it lacks a built-in speaker, so all alarms are delivered via instant alerts to your phone. While the unit is small and versatile, specific placement near the Hub is important for a stable connection (within 400 inches, so fairly close). I keep mine in the bathroom, fairly far away from the Hub.

This palm-sized device is reliable and discreet. Anyone in the Aqara ecosystem, using Matter or Zigbee already, will benefit from this device’s automation capabilities, and the option to add a Valve Controller T1 to actually shut down the water supply further extends this detector’s use.
