Birdfy has expanded its camera feeder range with the Feeder Metal 2 (4K), combining a significant camera upgrade with a redesigned AI identification system capable of recognising more than 6,000 bird species.
The jump from 1080p to 4K represents the most visible change from the original Metal feeder, with the wide-angle camera now capturing higher-resolution video that streams to the companion app for live viewing and recorded playback at a frame rate capped at 20fps to maintain consistent stream performance.
That camera feeds into Birdfy’s OrniSense AI system, which moves beyond the database-lookup approach of the previous feeder iteration by generating a custom summary of facts and contextual insights about each identified species, a feature that adds an educational dimension the earlier model could not provide.
That OrniSense system first appeared on the Hum Bloom, a dedicated hummingbird feeder Birdfy introduced at CES 2026, making the Metal 2 the second product to carry the technology and the first to bring it to a feeder built for a wider range of garden bird species.
Beyond the identification upgrade, the Feeder Metal 2 retains the chew-proof metal panel construction of its predecessor, a design choice that protects the 1.8-litre seed reservoir from squirrels and other garden animals capable of damaging standard plastic feeders with relative ease.c
A built-in solar cell removes the need for mains power access entirely, while an IP66 weatherproof rating means the unit tolerates rain and adverse outdoor conditions without requiring shelter, and an external Wi-Fi antenna extends wireless range for installation further from the home than the original supported without signal extenders.
The Feeder Metal 2 (4K) launches at $269.99, with a $299.99 variant available for buyers who want lifetime access to the OrniSense AI features, compared to the ongoing subscription model that mirrors the previous feeder’s pricing of $4.99 per month or $49 per year for standard access.
Birdfy has not confirmed UK pricing or availability for the Feeder Metal 2 (4K), though the product is currently listed on its website following today’s launch announcement.
